South Simcoe Railway–Tottenham, Ontario

This rail excursion lasts about an hour and may have one of four vintage locomotives pulling the train. I happened on this short excursion while working in Toronto. It is only an hour away from the city and it was a nice experience. The train goes from Tottenham to Beeton and back. Passengers cannot get off the train at Beeton as the town has no station.

The locomotive fleet includes:

#136, a Rogers 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in Paterson NJ in 1883

#1057, a  MLW 4-6-0 steam locomotive built in Montreal QC in 1912

#703, a GE 70 ton diesel-electric locomotive built in Erie PA in 1948

#22, a 44 ton diesel-hydraulic locomotive built in Kingston ON in 1960

They also have a diesel - electric yard switcher, Ruston - Honsby 165DE#10

I was lucky when I was there -- the #136 was pulling the train. This is one of the steam locomotives used in 1865 to build the Canadian Pacific Railways transcontinental line linking Canada from west to east.

The train leaves from the South Simcoe Railway station in Tottenham, Ontario (http://www.steamtrain.com/) and the trip lasts about an hour round trip covering farmland and open country side. There are no washrooms on the train so do your duty at the station. The train operates rain or shine. There is no smoking, drinking, or eating on the train.
